A Hooters in Tokyo is now renting its tables out for those who work from home.

Hooters has branched out in a big way. In a bid to bring in more people during the quiet 1pm to 7pm period, it is giving people the chance to rent seats to get some of their work done. It may only be in one restaurant in Tokyo, but if it is a success, it could see more of the franchise taking this approach to get more people through the door.

By collaborating with Spacee, an app that helps people rent work space, Hooters is allowing people to take their work away from home within the walls of its restaurant. It’s a relatively cheap option costing 50-yen for a half-hour block. That’s equivalent to about 33 pence, which would work out at about £42 a month if someone rented a desk for six hours a day. In return, they’ll get a desk to work at and discount off drinks.

When you compare this cost to other work space renting apps, such as WeWork, it is significantly cheaper. You can expect to be set back £141 a month for a hot desk, and that’s the entry level option. Though you will be supplied with free coffee and beer, and you may also enjoy extra perks like free yoga classes.

This collaboration for Hooters is not as extraordinary as you might expect. More people are starting to work from home, with casual, part-time and remote work on the increase. It was recently reported by the Trades Union Congress that one in 16 Brits now work from home1. WeWork is leading the apps of its nature, and it has also been reported that it was the largest private tenant in London by the end of 2017.
