The Costa chain’s expansion is on the rise as it takes over a former Game outlet in Erdington, Birmingham and joins the Marischal Square development in Aberdeen, Scotland.

A former Game outlet in High Street Erdington, which has been vacant since June 2016, will soon house a new Costa Coffee shop. Spanning over two floors – 232sq m on the ground floor and 177sq m on the first floor, the new Costa Coffee shop is not only expected to generate up to 12 new jobs, property agents Savills say it will attract customers to the entire area boosting custom at other shops with ‘linked trips’.

In Aberdeen, Scotland Costa Coffee becomes the latest food and beverage operator to join the £107m Marischal Square development, also home to All Bar One, Prezzo, Mackie’s Ice Cream and a 126-room Marriott International hotel. Marischal Square is owned by Aberdeen City Council and it is due to be completed later this year by Muse Developments as part of the city’s 25-year plan to boost a public and private sector regeneration. Aberdeen City Council culture spokeswoman Councillor Marie Boulton said: “It’s fantastic that Costa, which is one of most well-known national coffee chains and is already established in Aberdeen, is coming to Marischal Square. The Marischal Square development will help develop the east end of the city centre as part of the City Centre Masterplan plans for the area. “We want to attract prestigious brands to the development and the Costa announcement is also a boost to the north-east economy, as it shows the national retailer has confidence in the market.”

Costa is owned by Whitbread group and has 2,000 stores in the UK and over 1,100 stores in 30 countries worldwide. Whitbread announced that Costa Coffee is the driving force behind the souring sales with a group sales rise of 5.4%. Sales at Costa for the three months to February grew by 9.5% benefiting from the launch of its new ‘Flat White’ coffee at the end of January and in a year, the coffee chain opened 185 new Costa outlets in the UK and total sales grew by 21.0%.

Costa was founded by Italian brothers Sergio and Bruno Costa in 1985 and was bought by Whitbread in 1995.
