Travelodge announces ambitious port property plans

Travelodge has announced a £60 million expansion plan for ten of the UK’s biggest ports.

Travelodge is set to take advantage of the growing popularity of cruising in the UK by opening new hotels in its ten busiest ports. The expansion, which is set to cost £60 million, will include new budget properties in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Harwich, Hull, Liverpool, Newcastle, Poole, Portsmouth, Southampton and Tilbury.

The new hotels will join the 42 Travelodge’s already situated at the busiest ferry and cruise ports in the UK. It’s expected the new sites will create around 300 new jobs with both third-party contractors and within the hotels themselves, providing a welcome boost to the economy of the local areas. These new plans for expansion follow the successful opening of the new £9 million branch in Dover. Situated minutes away from one of the UK’s busiest ferry terminals, it’s the first Travelodge to open in the town as part of a £53 million development project.

Travelodge Property Director, Tony O’Brien expressed how there has been a “cruise boom” in recent years, with growing numbers of people predicted to choose a holiday at sea for their annual getaways.

“With more Britons taking to the waves, our port-based hotels are also benefiting from holidaymakers stopping over before embarking on, and returning from, their voyage. Therefore, we are getting on board now.” Travelodge is currently looking for the new expansion sites and hopes that its new port locations will provide an affordable, yet relaxing start to people’s holidays.
