The budget hotel chain has announced plans to open a second hotel in Hull.

Hull is set to get a second Travelodge hotel after the budget hotel chain announced plans to build a new property at the city’s port. Travelodge operates hundreds of hotels across the UK and first appeared in the city a few years ago.

The chain is looking to tap into the city’s tourism industry by providing travellers passing through the city on their way to the Netherlands, Belgium and Russia with a place to stay. The company has selected Hull as of ten key UK cruise port destinations it wants to target in the coming years. The expansion will see Travelodge having 42 hotels in the UK’s busiest ferry and cruise ports including Liverpool, Newcastle, Portsmouth and Southampton.

There has been a growth in the popularity of cruises, with 2017 seeing British holiday makers embarked on a record two million cruises. This was a 6% increase on 2016.

“The cruise boom is still underway and predicted to grow from strength to strength therefore we are getting on board now and looking for ten new hotel sites at UK’s growing Ports, which includes Hull,” Tony O’Brien, Travelodge property director, said.

“This overall expansion represents an investment of £60 million for third party investors and will create around 300 new jobs. With more Britons taking to the waves, our Port based hotels are benefiting from holidaymakers stopping over before embarking and returning from their voyage.”

The new project in Hull could coincide with the construction of a new £50 million cruise ship terminal that has been suggested by Hull City Council.

Travelodge recently announced the opening of its 560th hotel in Dover. The chain has also expanded globally and currently has around 50 locations outside of its UK base.
