Together with Heart Research UK, Subway held a fun run at the weekend to raise money for projects that promote heart health in the UK.

After the great success of previous years, Subway has once again held a fun run in Southampton on 29th April to raise money for Heart Research UK and its own Healthy Heart grant scheme.

Named the Subway Helping Hearts Family 5K, the race saw participants running a total of 5km and scramble over a giant inflatable obstacle course inspired by the Subway menu. Though, some runners did opt out of this final challenge and simply took the original route.

There was also a Family Village space set up for family and friends to enjoy the day. They could have their face painted, play games and enjoy their own inflatable apparatus.

Participants paid £8 to take part (£10 on the day), while those under 12 could run for free. This fee included a t-shirt, lunch from Subway, a finisher’s medal and access to the Family Village.

Runners were also encouraged to raise their own funds through sponsorship and all the money went towards Subway’s Healthy Heart grant programme and Heart Research UK.

The Subway Healthy Heart programme donates up to £10,000 to local projects across the UK that are involved in promoting heart health in their local communities. Heart Research UK, which helped Subway to host the event, is the second largest heart charity in the UK and funds medical research into the prevent, treatment and cure of heart disease.

The fun run not only raises money for the various projects but it also increases awareness for the importance of looking after our hearts. Barbara Harpham, Chief Executive of Heart Research UK explains, “The Subway Helping Hearts Family 5K fun run series is the perfect way to improve both your heart health and your community’s”.

Sacha Clark, Managing Director for Subway UK and Ireland added, “it’s fantastic to see the (5K) series growing, and we cannot wait to see more families supporting healthy heart programmes in their communities.”

As well as supporting heart health in the UK, Subway is an advocate of Sports for Schools, a scheme that encourages children to get active and see physical education as an important part of growing up.
