Subway Singapore receives halal certification
Subway Singapore restaurants to display halal certificate, after official certification from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore.
Following the ritual cleansing of all its outlets across Singapore, Subway Singapore has received official halal certification from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, with all but one of its restaurants to begin to display the halal certificate.
The exception is the company’s outlet in Wisteria Mall in Yishun, which the sandwich franchise has said in an emailed statement “is still in the application process”.
The road to official certification began in March, with the company’s announcement of the removal of pork from its menu, and its efforts to begin the ritual cleansing of all outlets across Singapore. The company posted from the official Subway Singapore Facebook account: “Subway Singapore has initiated a Halal certification process and all restaurants in the market will serve only non-pork protein beginning 21 March 2018.”
As part of the process in achieving official certification from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, Subway told Channel NewsAsia that its ritual cleansing of outlets required all pork-based products to be replaced with chicken and beef with immediate effect. As part of MUIS’ requirements outlets are also to have at least two Muslim employees.
Despite initial netizen criticism following the announcement, the United States based company has described the official certification as a testament to its latest efforts to bring Subway to “everyone in the broader community”.
Finding its humble beginnings in 1965 with 17 year-old Fred Deluca, a partnership with friend Peter Buck and a start-up fund of only $1,000, the Subway name has only continued to grow. Now with over 22,000 franchisees worldwide and located in 112 countries, the well-loved brand named the halal certification as a large part of its latest effort in “bringing the subway experience” into homes and communities across the globe.
