Students at UWE will now be able to grab a fresh sandwich or salad on campus thanks to a new opening.

Sandwich franchise, Subway, has opened a store at the University of West England (UWE) in Bristol.

The new Subway store is open seven days a week and offers indoor seating for up to 32 customers with plans in place for further outdoor seating. It has provided six new jobs for the local community and student population. Two of the positions have been created with the student in mind as they are term-time only contracts. A range of shifts are on offer to fit around student timetables, e.g. lunchtimes and outside typical study hours.

The new store is located in Q Block on Frenchay Campus near a visitor car park, perfect for those looking for a freshly prepared Sub on the go while at university.

The UWE outlet is part of Subway’s plan to launch more stores in non-traditional locations, like universities. It’s one of 25 stores opened at educational institutions in the UK and Ireland, along with locations in Northumbria University and the University of Hertfordshire. These outlets offer students a convenient and quick option that’s still fresh and nutritious.

Colin Hughes, Country Director for Subway UK and Ireland, commented:

“We are delighted to see the opening of a Subway store at UWE Bristol. As a company, we’re committed to serving nutritious food options that offer variety and value, which we know are very important factors to students. Students, lecturers and visitors to the university will now be able to enjoy our ever-evolving menu, such as our 21 new and improved ingredients, which includes Gluten Free Bread, Sun Blush tomatoes, diced beetroot, crispy onions and our new flavour station offering wide-ranging choice and delicious food options throughout the day.”

The University of West England was searching for an establishment that would suit student needs in terms of convenience and the atmosphere they were already familiar with.

Kristian Fernandez-Mitchell, Business Improvement Manager at the University of the West of England, explains why she went with the sandwich franchise as the latest addition to the campus restaurants. She said:

“Following student survey feedback, we realised that improving the university’s food offering was key to giving our students a great experience on campus. We wanted to create a destination and high street brands appeared to be key to giving students what they want. Ultimately, big brands are what students want and with Subway being in the top three for student choice, it was evident that Subway was a winning choice for students here at UWE Bristol.”
