Papa John’s launches plant-based cheese

Papa John’s is joining the plant-based revolution by launching a vegan cheese option for its pizzas.

Papa John’s is the latest pizza franchise to launch a dairy-free cheese option that can be added to any of its delicious pizzas.

As many people try a plant-based or vegan diet to mark Veganuary, a month-long challenge that asks people to try cutting out all animal products, Papa John’s is the latest place that they’ll soon be able to indulge in a tasty treat.

The decision came after a petition was launched to try and persuade Papa John’s to launch a non-dairy cheese alternative to make its menu more inclusive. A spokesperson for the franchise said:

“We were pleased to see the positive response to the recent vegan cheese alternative petition, as this is currently an area that we are developing and hoping to roll out in the not-so-distant future.”

Co-founder of Vegan Food UK, Liam Day, praised the franchise for taking the positive step towards a more inclusive menu for all dietary requirements.

“This news is not only positive for those who avoid dairy but still want to eat at familiar places, but also for the future of veganism. With such a huge company adding more vegan options, others are sure to follow their example."

And Animal Aid Campaign Manager, Tod Bradbury, who put his support behind the petition said:

“We are thrilled to see that Papa John's has reacted positively to our petition, and that it is looking to introduce a vegan cheese alternative very soon. By adding vegan cheese to its menu, Papa John's will be showing that it is up to date with the fast-growing vegan movement. It will appeal to a much wider audience - be they vegans, those wanting to try vegan food or indeed those who have allergies to dairy products. We hope that Papa John's decision not only has a positive effect on its sales, but also encourages other pizza chains and restaurants who haven't yet introduced a vegan cheese to do so."
