Metro Rod shares signs of leaking drain pipes

The network of drainage experts recently shared on its website four key signs to look out for in the hunt for an indication that a drain pipe is leaking.
Leaking drains can cause any number of different issues in both commercial and domestic settings, and Metro Rod understand this very well. The drainage franchise is one of the UK’s leading drain care and maintenance companies and, according to its gathered expertise, there are four signs to watch out for.
Sign one: Mould and damp. Apparently, “A tell-tale sign of drain leaks is damp and mould growth. Although both substances can be produced by condensation and rainwater penetration, a drain pipe leak will cause water to seep into your property. This will develop a moist environment, allowing damp and mould to grow.”
Sign two: Subsidence. In the words of Metro Rod, “Subsidence typically arises during prolonged dry spells, when the ground is deprived of moisture and shrinks. However, it can also be caused by a leak in a drain pipe. When water from a leaking drain pipe soaks into the soil underneath the property, it can cause it to soften and wash away, leading to the property’s foundations moving.” Common signs of subsidence include sinking or sloping floors, doors and windows that become jammed or misaligned over time, and cracks appearing in walls, drives, pathways, and connecting areas between homes and extensions.
Sign three: Surface water pooling. When water pools “on the ground around your property” or bubbles up “through paving on the driveway or grass in the garden”, this could be a clear sign of a burst drain pipe. And finally, sign four: Foul odours. When smells come up “through the drain itself”, this might also indicate a leak.
