Metro Rod crowns community champions

Metro Rod Cambridge celebrated the truly outstanding members of its local community at the third annual Ely Hero Awards.

Drainage franchise Metro Rod’s Cambridge location celebrated with the local community of Ely last week as it crowned the winners of its annual Ely Hero Awards.

The heart-warming awards ceremony celebrates those who have gone above and beyond for the community or proved themselves to be amazing in the face of adversity.

First up to receive their award was Louise Drake from Sewing Daze, who took home the title of Smiliest Server. She was recognised for her commitment to providing incredible customer service to every customer she encounters.

"This has been a real honour and ultimately it's the customers who have nominated me for this that allow me to live my dream," Louise beamed.

Next, Mark Cornell from Prospects Trust was presented with the award for Colleague of the Year. His work at Prospects Trust helps adults with learning disabilities access worthwhile work experience opportunities. Caring companion of the year was named as Priscilla Free, who cares for her 40-year-old daughter but still makes time for those in need in the local community.

Humble dentist Thomas O’Connor was named as the Most Amazing Professional and selflessly said:

"None of us are a hero on our own. It is a real group effort and there is a lot of hard work, but we always want to give something back to the community."

Barry and Joan Lonsdale walked away with the Neighbour of the Year title and thanked their neighbours for the incredible recognition. Community Champion Fleur Patten and teacher Carlene Chambers were recognised for the ways they’ve given back too.

The Metro Rod organised event also honoured the youngest members of the community, with Megan Langford taking home the Child of Achievement award. However, she selflessly donated her award to fellow finalist Jucinda, commenting.

"I gave my award to the girl in the wheelchair because I thought she deserved it."

Finally the biggest award of the night, the Ely Hero Award trophy, went to Alison Fitt. The worthy winner was honoured for her work in the community to help parents struggling with bereavement, after losing her son Charlie at the tender age of 15 a few years prior. She even bravely launched a naked charity calendar to turn her pain into something positive.
