In a recent blog post from the expert plumbing franchise, Metro Plumb detailed the risks that a burst pipe can cause and explained what to do if the worst does happen.
Metro Plumb is hugely experienced in all things plumbing and pipes, and in this blog post, the plumbing franchise sought to share its insights surrounding burst pipes and water damage to ceilings with readers. In Metro Plumb’s words, “If you’ve noticed water dripping from your ceiling, you must act swiftly to secure the situation. Ceiling leaks can be hazardous because they can lead to severe property damage and significant health risks. The quicker you act, the less damage a water leak from the ceiling can cause.”
There are several different explanations for a leaking ceiling, with the most common being that a) the property structure is old and susceptible to faults, b) severe weather conditions have caused damage and allowed external water to leak through or c) issues with the internal plumbing system have caused the issue, such as leaking or burst pipes. If a burst pipe IS the cause of a leaking ceiling, it must be dealt with immediately. Failure to do so will risk electrocution, ceiling collapse and electrical fire (as a result of water causing electricity sparks).
Metro Plumb recommends that anyone who spots a leak caused by a burst pipe turns off their property’s electrical supply, considers turning off their water supply and removes any valuable items/furniture from the room in which the leak is present. Plus, “If there is a prominent bulge in the ceiling, this indicates that it’s at risk of collapsing. The best course of action to take here is to use a screwdriver to make a small 10 – 20 mm hole where the water is leaking.
Then, “Place a bucket or washbowl underneath the hole to ensure water doesn’t leak onto your floor.” This will be a cheaper fix than a fully collapsed ceiling. Having taken these steps, call in an expert ASAP. Metro Plumb recommended, of course, its own extensive network of experts. If you’re interested in becoming a part of this network as a franchisee, you can visit Metro Plumb’s profile page (linked above) for more information.
