Kumon celebrates its star pupils

Kumon awards its brightest stars in a ceremony at Bristol Museum’s school room.

In a ceremony attended by Bristol’s Lady Mayoress, Bianca Denecia Caroline Durrant, and The Rt Hon Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Cleo Lake, supplementary education franchise Kumon rewarded some of its best students.

The event, which was held in Bristol Museum’s school room and took place on the 1st June, rewarded those who had really excelled at Kumon’s Maths and English programmes. The children who were recognised had made great progress through the programmes and excelled at the course they were on. They were joined in their celebration by their parents and Kumon tutors and were treated to a guided tour of the museum once the awards ceremony had finished.

The celebration came just before the Bristol Post Education Awards, which was held on the 26th of June. The awards aim to spotlight those in the city’s education sector who are committed to their work and improving the lives of the children they teach. Teaching staff will be able to enjoy the achievements of their schools, pupils and possibly, themselves, with trophies such as the Kumon Sponsored ‘Teacher of the Year’ award up for grabs.

Andrew Holder, Regional Manager for Kumon, explained why he thought so many children were excelling at their courses.

“As I wander around the centres across the Bristol region I am reminded of a mathematical formula. For outstanding students you need three things – great parents, great students and great instructors. Without that combination it just doesn’t work and in this room I believe we are blessed with having that great combination.”

The ‘Kumon Method’ was developed in 1954 by parent and gifted teacher Toru Kumon and aims to help both struggling and gifted learners reach a level of study that’s higher than the standard for their age. Kumon now has over 24,000 centres across 50 countries, with 70,000 students in the UK and Ireland alone.
