Franchise Support - Operations
Jakob Pii, writer
Support for franchise partners has always been fundamental to the success of Minster Cleaning. It has used 40 years in the industry to establish systems to simplify many of the important day-to-day business activities, leaving franchisees free to concentrate on building a substantial, valuable asset.
With 35 years’ experience in the cleaning industry including 31 years in franchising, operations manager Ian Hadley has an in-depth understanding of the operational issues that can arise in a large network such as Minster Cleaning’s.
Ian carries out operational health checks to ensure consistency of best practice across the network and compliance with current legislation, such as rises in the national living wage.
As well as providing help for franchise partners in areas such as health and safety, risk assessment and equipment purchases, Ian is actively involved in sourcing leads for suitable national contracts and identifying opportunities for offering a service to national and regional clients across several Minster Cleaning branches.
Healthcare is an important and growing market for Minster Cleaning thanks to its expertise in providing specialist cleaning services to the sector. Ian has recently aligned Minster Cleaning’s healthcare cleaning plans and audit processes with newly issued NHS national standards of healthcare cleanliness guidelines.
With Covid-19 restrictions now eased, Ian has restarted face-to-face training programmes while maintaining virtual training options for those who want them. Topics include BICSc (British Institute of Cleaning Science) licence to practice, infection control and values-based training. In early 2022, after Ian’s hard work and a detailed compliance assessment, the Minster Cleaning Network Support Centre has achieved the ISO 9001(2015) accreditation (the international standard for quality management).
Minster Cleaning offers a safe and secure future whether franchise partners buy an established business or a new territory. They get help with the transition from employment to self-employment as well as with accounting, training, marketing, operations and the complex fields of employment law, health and safety and environmental legislation.
Minster Cleaning annual turnover is now well in excess of £40million and, with a reputation for integrity and professionalism, it is one of the UK’s leading commercial cleaning management franchises. The top branches turn over more than £2million per year, half of franchise partners bring in annual revenues of £1million+ and some generate in excess of £200,000 in net profit.
Minster Cleaning franchise partners come from a wide range of professions, but all have people-management abilities, commercial awareness and determination in common, essential attributes for a management franchise where some branches employ well over 200 people.
The size of territories means that there is always ample potential for growth. By securing contracts from just a small fraction of the market in their area, franchise partners can build a highly successful business. As commercial cleaning is an essential service that appeals to a broad client base, the market isn’t too greatly affected by fluctuations in the UK economy.
Minster Cleaning is a leading force in office cleaning and has been a full member of the British Franchise Association since 1992. On average, franchise partners have been with Minster Cleaning for 14 years and some longer serving franchisees are planning to retire in the next few years. There are currently resales available in Devon and Cornwall, Essex and Nottingham.
New franchise opportunities include Cambridge, Doncaster, Durham, Guildford, Leicester, London, Middlesex, Peterborough and Swansea. Initial start-up cost is £20,000 plus vat, which covers licence Fee, Territory, IT Equipment & Training, plus a comprehensive marketing launch package. In addition, a minimum of £35,000 working capital plus personal drawings is required. Finance support is available from leading high street banks, subject to status.
