The plumbing and drainage company recently shared four expert ways to prevent and remove limescale with customers via its website.

When it comes to dreaded limescale, a natural by-product of hard water, Drain Doctor is an expert. For customers living in the 60% of UK homes with hard water, limescale can be an issue, leading to the more frequent servicing and replacement of dishwashers, washing machines and shower heads. Removing it is necessary, and the plumbing franchise recently shared a few ways for customers to do exactly this.

Tip number one is to invest in a water softener. According to Drain Doctor, “Water softeners work by using a process called ion exchange. This essentially removes the calcium and magnesium minerals from the water supply, transforming the hard water into soft water. They do this by using negatively charged polymer resin beads to attract the minerals in hard water and replace them with sodium ions.”

“Once this process is complete, water softeners will pass a salt water solution through the resin beads to detach the minerals they captured. This process is called regeneration. You’ll need to check your water softener at least once a month to ensure it has enough salt to function properly.”

Tip number two is to clean your appliances regularly, wiping over all wet fittings after every use (and paying extra attention to areas where water might sit and pool, like showers, baths and sinks).

Finally, the third tip provided by the franchise was to make your own DIY limescale remover by mixing one part white vinegar with one part water. Drain Doctor said, “Either spray this mixture over areas with limescale or soak a clean tea towel in it and wrap this tightly around the fitting. Leave the solution to sit for at least 10 minutes (increase this to several hours or leave overnight for particularly stubborn patches).” Find out more about investing with this helpful, customer-focused plumbing franchise via its profile page, which you’ll discover linked above.
