Home insurance policies can be complex and detailed, and Aspray recently broke down the basics in a blog shared to the property repair and claims management company’s website.

Aspray decided to share its expansive knowledge with readers in this blog, understanding that “deciphering all the parts of your home insurance policy can be difficult” and seeking to assist. The management franchise explained that every home insurance policy followed the same general format: “A conditions page, a definitions section, exclusions to the policy, and sections detailing the cover for property insurance and liability.” The policy schedule should then include:

  • Your insurance company’s name
  • Your name
  • Your address
  • The period of insurance
  • Your level of cover
  • Your premiums
  • Any special conditions/changes made to the policy

Aspray also explained a few additional points:

  • Definitions - Each policy should always include a definitions page, and customers can head to this part of the policy for clarification if they’re confused about anything.

  • The difference between property cover and contents cover - Property cover is taken out to cover damage to your home e.g., a fire. It doesn’t cover normal wear and tear. Contents cover protects the things that are inside your home e.g., furniture items, clothing items, phones, laptops and jewellery (under a certain stipulated value).

  • Alternative accommodation: If a loss forces you away from your home, this type of inclusion enables you to access alternative accommodation for housing yourself and family members.

  • Liability cover: This covers against legal action for bodily injury or property damage that you may have caused to other people. It’ll pay for the cost of litigation/court awards.
