Energie Fitness Tunbridge Wells took on the LEJOG challenge to raise money for vital new equipment at a local hospital.
Energie Fitness in Tunbridge Wells took part in the gruelling LEJOG challenge to raise money for Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.
Its local hospital desperately needed funds for a new bladder scanner, so the gym franchise’s Tunbridge Wells branch stepped up to help out. It took on the LEJOG (Land’s End to John O’Groats) challenge, which saw its staff and members cover a combined distance of a whopping 847 miles.
Speaking about the challenge, manager Ray Betts said:
“Our aim is to get people to cover the distance in a number of ways – by running, rowing, cross-training or cycling. We chose it because it can be done in any measurable way and it’s easy to track how far you’ve gone. People of all ages and abilities will be able to take part in it and make a donation – even if it’s just a pound. I’ve got many friends who have done LEJOG events, including Sean Conway, who’s the only man to swim the length of Britain. But this is something that anyone can do.”
Ray aimed to raise £4000 during the challenge and is yet to reveal how much was actually donated, but the selfless event is bound to have a big impact on the hospital trust’s fundraising campaign.
Ray was even endorsed by legendary explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who said:
“All the very best to everyone taking part and supporting the fundraiser to raise money for a new bladder scanner unit for the NHS.”
Laura Kenny, who is in charge of fundraising at the Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells Hospital Trust, said:
“Good luck to the Énergie Fitness team taking on this fantastic challenge! We are delighted that every one of the team’s 847 miles will be supporting our charity. We hope local people will get behind them. Charity donations really do make a difference to Tunbridge Well Hospital. A special thanks goes to Ray for his support.”
