International fashion retail brand Next has over 700 stores across the globe. Over 500 of these are located in the UK, where Next is listed as a FTSE 100 company. The retail giant provides over 43,000 jobs in the UK alone and has a presence on most of the country’s high streets. That being said, Next is increasingly investing in out-of-town retail parks, with home and fashion stores opening in Hedgend and Maidstone in 2014 as well as one in Barnstaple in 2018.

The first Next womenswear store opened in 1982 on Regent’s Street, London. In that year alone, 70 Next stores were opened across in the UK. The famous Next catalogue directory was converted to online in 1999 and launched the retail chain into a new era. Adapting to the demands of the modern market, in 2015, Next introduced next day delivery for orders placed before midnight.

According to Invesp, the UK is now the global leader in the percentage of retail sales taking place online (15.6%). Next is evolving its business model to find its place in this new age of retail, offering online exclusive lines and a ‘Shop my local store’ service which allows customers to browse their local stores from digital devices.
