Mathnasium franchisees double enrollment figures during pandemic

Mathnasium’s Clifton Park, Niskayuana and Guilderland branches have seen double their usual number of enrollments amid the pandemic.

The New-York-based franchise units have noticed a spike in demand, as parents try to make sure their children continue to develop their academic skills.

The tutoring franchise Mathnasium creates tailored learning plans for individual students based on their needs, and provides both in-person and virtual tutoring sessions. In the US, it takes on children from second grade, all the way through to senior year.

Ryker Kelvin, the franchise’s Director of Enrollment, said,

"Someone’s going to have their student doing distant learning, potentially not understanding it. So, now they have this second job where they’re googling answers - it’s a lot to ask for families. And we’re able to really take it and say, hey let us take it so you don’t have to be the math tutor."

He added,

"When a student comes to Mathnasium the first time we give them an assessment. We really want to see what fundamental skills or knowledge they’re missing, so we can help fill the gaps."

Mathnasium also dishes out awards to incentivise learning and development:

"They earn a star and then the stars can be accumulated and traded in for a ton of different prizes,” Ryker explained.

At a time when many students feel disconnected from their schools and teachers, Mathnasium offers a valuable service by creating a positive learning environment. It’s a safe space for children to develop their skills and understanding.

According to Ryker, many of the students who take advantage of Mathnasium’s offering reach honours classes and high grades. He said,

"The students who were feeling totally lost at the beginning of the school year now are set up for the honours.”
