Being part of the team that helps make a wedding day so special can be exciting and rewarding. This year, happy couples are spending an average of £31,974 on their wedding. These huge sums of money contribute to a highly profitable sector worth around £10 billion – and this is on the rise. That’s because weddings are increasingly elaborate affairs – and the result of collaboration between a huge number of different service providers; florists, caterers, cake makers, dress boutiques, photographers, bands – the list goes on. So, there are plenty of wedding jobs to choose from if you want to join the industry.

Wedding jobs – which to choose?

If you’re passionate about weddings and being part of the big day is something you want to say yes to, there is a huge range of different wedding jobs you could get involved in. In fact, there are so many that you might not know which to choose.

But, while they all work towards creating a magical day for a happy couple, they each require a specific set of skills and attributes. Let’s take a look at some of the options and which type of person they would suit.

Wedding planner – This type of business helps to organise some of the most important elements of the wedding day and ensure that everything runs to schedule. A wedding planner’s job is to take the pressure off the bride and groom, whilst still allowing them to have creative control if they wish. For imaginative individuals, this can be a fulfilling and rewarding career. A successful wedding planner should be a people person with excellent organisation skills, a head for marketing, an eye for detail and compassion for others. Depending on the type of business you join – or launch – you can be involved with as many or as few elements of the big day as you want.

Wedding dress boutique owner – This is one wedding job that many people dream about; pairing brides with their perfect dress. Although it seems like an idyllic profession, watching customers twirl in beautiful outfits and sipping champagne, it has its challenges – like any job. You’ll need to be patient and understanding – for when the bride-to-be just can’t decide – and have a fantastic eye for detail. You should also be willing to do plenty of research to keep on top of industry trends, so you always stock the designs and fabrics that are most popular with women. Given that brides, on average, spend £1,385 on their dress, there’s potential for you to launch a highly lucrative business in this sector if you get it right.

Wedding cake maker – When you think of wedding cakes, you probably imagine a perfect, white, tiered cake, possibly topped with decorative icing, fresh fruit or flowers. If you’re a wedding cake maker, you’ve got to craft these wonderful creations! It goes without saying that you’ll need specialist cake-making skills, but you should also have an eye for detail and lots of patience. It’s also critical that you can work under pressure – many couples spend hundreds of pounds on their wedding cake, so you’ll need to be able to produce a product that lives up to their expectations – and deliver it on time!

Wedding photographer – In this wedding job, you’ll have the privilege of capturing the magical day for your couples. Of course, you’ll need to have great photography skills, no matter whether you’re shooting in the middle of the day or at night. It’s safe to say this isn’t a wedding job for a shy and retiring type. You’ll need to have the confidence to move your way through the wedding party and make sure you get good photos of every guest, and even suggest photo ideas to the bride and groom. This can be a stressful profession, as you need to get fantastic shots first time round, so you must be able to work under pressure.
