As a nation, we are starting to think more about our health and what we put into our bodies. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the 2019 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report shows that the UK health and fitness industry is at an all-time high.

The UK Fitness Industry

The market value is healthier than it’s ever been, with the highest amount of gyms and members ever. Over the last year, the total number of people who have memberships at a gym in the UK has exceeded 10 million and the strong sector is worth over £5 billion. This equates to one in seven people in the UK being a member of a gym.

The report shows that there has been a 2.9 percent increase in the number of fitness facilities, 4.7 percent increase in the number of members and a 4.2 percent increase in market value.

Pure Gym and GLL are still the leading private and public operators respectively, based on the number of gyms and members. Last year, Pure Gym became the first health club to reach 200 centres and this year GLL joined it, with 203 gyms. In case you didn’t know, GLL is the largest operator in the UK that works in partnership with local authorities, public agencies and sport organisations. Its facilities include leisure centres, outdoor activity centres, children’s centres and libraries.

Gym Business for Sale

So, after looking at the state of the industry, what better time to buy a gym for sale? Like with the launch of any business, there is the decision of whether to take the independent start-up route or to take the franchise route. With the former, you can often struggle to compete with businesses that have an established brand name, as building a loyal customer base takes time. Franchises can provide you with business management support and industry insights. This in turn should help get people to sign up much quicker, as well as it helping with insurance and compliance issues.

A parent company can also help you get access to discounted equipment and you can make the most of its buying power. Franchises can also help with finding the perfect venue and meeting planning requirements.
